Waking Up/Wrong Place (2011)

So I was planning to move some old data to a new medium. You know those old 3.5 inch disks that was used ages ago… I still have them… Some of them are already dead, so it’s time to rescue what’s still readable. So I unpacked my last working piece of Amiga hardware, an Amiga 500 and plugged it into an old TV, just to find out that the screen just went blank. No smoke, just white screen and a glowing power LED. No smoke is good. And bad. It is often much easier to locate the issue if something says; “Hey you, fix me! Over here! BANG!”
After opening the case it was quite easy to see what had happened. Battery acid on the PCB’s… The computer was equipped with an expansion board containing battery backed up realtime clock. It probably stopped working ages ago, and now the acid had been dripping down on to the main board destroying some of the traces.
Some cleanup and measurements showed that the data bus was broken on the highest bit, D15. Using an ampere meter as a bypass, I was able to get a familiar look on the screen:
Ah, nice (ugly) red wire bypass operation done. Verify with random demo disk:
Note to self 1; Remove batteries from stuff when not being used for a while.
Note to self 2; Only buy hardware that includes block diagram and schematics in the box.
After fixing the hardware, the data is transferred using LapLink cable, APCComm and some custom scripting on both sides. It takes some time to transfer, but each disk needs only minimal amount of manual work.
Born in the 90′s? Check out The Silents/Crionics Hardwired from 1991 and be amazed what was possible (awesome music by Jesper Kyd):
Well, the old content manager/publisher was getting really dusty in the world of web2.0 platforms… We’ll see what happens with this new off-the-shelf system. The theme/layout/colors are new – ugly colors and minimal design as always.
Old posts are moved to the new database, but at the moment some content/media is still missing. You can still reach the old 3.0 were all the old media is available.
Btw, Here’s an old tune of mine (from 2000) to keep you warm during the fall:
I am starting to share some of my projects on GitHub, both for the idea that someone might be interested in the code snippets, and also to be able to productify my ideas a little better. Stay tuned for projects involving AVR-microcontrollers, hardware schematics, Nintendo DS-hacks, Bash/Python scripting, Pure Data-externals, junks and tricks…
The film director Martin Mejia has been using a few musical notes composed by me in his short “A story of Johan”.
Edit: You can now watch it at Vimeo!
Ive been assisting Christian Andersson with some technology again. Christian and Terje Östling has some new stuff called “Schrödingers Cat” in Vitenfabrikken in Sandnes, Norway. Also look out for his file cabinets…
A really cool video by Mattias Rickardsson is now available on the Internet. It shows Christian Anderssons art installation in Otterndorf, Germany in the spring/summer of 2005 when Mattias and I teamed up with Christian for the construction. Check it out, if you have not seen the chairs live!

On Sync24′s webpage you can download and listen to my performance (as well as the others) this summer at the headphone festival. They are in the popular ogg-format, and most mp3-players handle these files as well.
Also when I’m writing this it can me nice to tell you about the mobile phone interference that you can hear around 9 minutes into the performance; they were actually part of my broadcast; and result was what I wanted it to be – some people in the audience running around looking for their phones! ;)

A short snippet of my field recording “Möllevången – Italia – France – Berlin” was played last tuesday (15/8) at Swedish national radio SR P1, in the program “Kropp & själ” (body & soul). The topic for the show was sounds in peoples surroundings, and how they affect people.
